Our Learn to Skate program is designed to help beginners build confidence and develop fundamental skating skills in a fun and supportive environment. Led by experienced instructors, participants will learn balance, stopping, turning, and basic skating techniques through engaging drills and games. Perfect for kids who are new to inline skating.

About the Trainer
Thomas Hughes
A dedicated leader in the roller hockey community with extensive experience as a player, coach, official, and program director across multiple levels of the sport.
- Currently serving as an FDNY Firefighter in South Jamaica, Queens, Tom brings the same commitment, discipline, and teamwork to the rink that he brings to public service.
- A graduate of SUNY Cortland, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, where he also served as President of the Cortland Roller Hockey Program, helping elevate the organization’s visibility and competitive success. He later completed a Master’s degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from Emporia State University, further strengthening his expertise in athlete development, sport programming, and leadership.
- Sachem middle school and high school Roller Hockey coach, guiding young athletes through skills development, team culture building, and competitive growth.
- Hockey Director at Camp Wayne in Pennsylvania, where he oversaw program curriculum, staff development, and multi-age player engagement.
- 20 + years of experience playing, coaching, and refereeing hockey across a wide range of ages and skill levels.
- Passion for fostering inclusive, high-quality roller hockey experiences.
- Committment to developing strong programs, growing player participation, and creating an environment where athletes learn, compete, and thrive.
